There are no plans to support any server behaviours by default going forward by Adobe as far as I know . They have thrown that side of things over to 3rd party developers one or two have developed extensions but I don't know how good they are or what they are capable of.
I took it upon myself to learn how to code using mysqli - it wasn't difficult - you get familiar with the code and it opens up all sorts of new possibilities that is just not possible if you rely on a set of very limited server behaviours.
