If you aren't backing up your catalog on a regular basis then you are walking on extremely thin ice. If that catalog becomes corrupted, or if your computer crashes, you get the idea, you'll lose all your work. Why are you not backing up your catalog? It is the file that stores all of your changes, has all of your history, is absolutely critical to the functioning of Lightroom. Are you willing to throw away all your work? Part of the backup process optimizes the catalog, so that could contribute to compromised performance. But I would look at other possibilities as well. You could try deleting your preferences file to see if that makes a difference.
