It usually means that you don't have sufficient master material to fill the clip in the master timeline. For example, if you place a clip of 5 second duration in the master timeline, create a sub clip from it, then edit the sub clip and cut 1 second from the end. You will see 1 second of diagonal lines at the end of the clip in the master timeline.
