I think you have misunderstood. The first time you edit a raw photo in Photoshop, sent from Lightroom, you end up with a secondary file. It will be PSD or TIF depending on your choices in the Lightroom set up. When you want to do additional work in Photoshop, you open that PSD or TIF file choosing the "Edit in Photoshop" option. Lightroom will give you a choice of the original or a copy. You want to edit that original PSD or TIF file. That will reopen that same file back in Photoshop with any layers you have created still intact. And you can continue editing that same image.
