Can someone help advise me on converting and submitting CMYK for the first time? (In slow and easy language please)

There are more discussions on this subject (and opinions) than Carter has pills, and I have read a lot of them... but I am confused still and since I have less than 7 hours to resolve this issue, I am calling out for some help.

1st .. I know I need more to learn on this subject ... but that does not change my deadline

2nd .. this is a simple Corporate Head-shot that is being produced in a print magazine with an article written by my client.

3rd .. The publisher asked for the photo to be in CMYK and since this publisher is in the USA, my assumption at this late date is that the standard CMYK color profile - U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2  produced by Photoshop is sufficient.

I may be on the right track now, but I am completely side stepping Lightroom for any editing and staying in Photoshop in Adobe RGB (1998)

At this time, when I click on View and choose PROOF,CMYK is selected.  I do not know if this is accurate, or if selecting this is premature.

I plan to complete my edits in PS and then Click on IMAGE and then MODE and choose CMYK.           Currently, for my editing process, it is set on RGB

I am hoping that Save As CMYK will be available after making the MODE change, but currently, my Save As Feature has only ADOBE RGB (1998) available.  Also save as a Copy and a box to include Layers or not.

Yesterday, when working on this file, I clicked PROOF and CMYK but I saw no difference in the editing....  It maybe because I exported a ProPhoto file from Lightroom as a base to start with.... I am not sure, though.

My concern is this............ yesterday, I saved as a CMYK file and it looked great on my monitor.  I emailed it to the Client (I had chosen the JPG extension) and when she got it, the colors were OFF.  She emailed the files back to me, and they were indeed way off..  This told me that it was not a monitor calibration issue between her PC and mine.   Which brings me to the last issue... my monitor is calibrated "by eye" to a Printer Company I use for my regular photography - which has worked great!    And unfortunately, at this late date, I can not get a Printer Profile from the Publisher.

Thank you for reading all of this..... I am just wondering if my current game plan is sufficient for this late hour....

       No Lightroom

Editing in Photoshop in ADOBE RGB (1998)

Keeping the "PROOF" selection to CMYK while I edit

Upon Completion of my Editing, Click on MODE and change to CMYK

Save the File as CMYK in JPG.   (all other file types are too large for client to handle via Email)

Am I missing anything????
